Back at the Forth Rail Bridge a further interception of the intruders was made shortly before 16.00 hours when 603’s F/O John ‘Bolster’ Boulter became detached from his section – F/O Fred Rushmer and F/O Geoff Wynne-Powell – and caught up with a Ju88 near Inverkeithing. Potato pickers at Spencerfield Farm watched as Bolster chased the Junkers through the deadly puffs of anti-aircraft fire from the battery at RNAS Donibristle and out to sea over Aberdour. Boulter broke off his attack and returned to base. He was unable to confirm if his attack had been successful as the German aircraft disappeared into the sea haze.
