15 – Destroyer pens at Port Edgar

In 1916 destroyer pens were built at Port Edgar providing safe moorings for these small ships in the sometimes stormy waters of the Forth.

Commodore Sir Hugh Justin Tweedie commanded the destroyer flotillas of the Grand Fleet during World War I.

He wrote an account of his life with the Grand Fleet, and the last act of the war, the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet, which you can read HERE or you can listen to a narration of this text by Ian Dunn HERE

Tweedie’s daughter Mona also wrote an account of her life in South Queensferry during World War 1.

You can read extracts from her work HERE and listen to a narration of her account by Marie Clare Munro HERE
