Carlingnose Battery was part of the set of coastal defences created in North Queensferry around the end of the 19th century.
This 1915 OS map shows the location of Carlingnose Battery and Barracks, the Coastguard Battery and associated Defence Lights and the Submarine Mining Station at Port Laing.
Carlingnose Fort was the combination of Carlingnose Battery and Carlingnose Barracks.
Land for the various sites was acquired in 1898 and 1899.
